The following relationship habits have been identified as being possibly current ways that Managers interact with employees. They all have negative consequences as outlined below:

1. We play favourites with employees – Employees see this behaviour and model their behaviour on yours. They may have favourite Managers too, that they know that they can talk to about what is going on in the work place. Or they may be able to manipulate these Managers by playing games.

2. We micro manage employees – By not giving employees the space to perform their jobs, you are indicating that you don’t trust employees to do the right thing and therefore cause them to do the wrong thing as that is the behaviour that is expected of them.

3. We expect employees to stay late after work and not be paid for over time – Employees may have commitments after work such as children or sporting activities. In order for them to feel balanced and happy, they need to engage in activities outside of work.

4. We only meet with employees when they have done something wrong – They will come to associate you with being the School Principal and that the only time they come to you is when they are being told off.

5. We get too emotionally involved with our employees – To remain objective when dealing with employees, we should keep our emotions out of the discussion and request our employees to not become emotional.

6. We begin to believe the soap opera – Staff members can hardly be expected to speak about facts if they are becoming emotional. Try and address what the real problem is without directing bame to employees.

7. We get caught up in the dramas and stress of the workplace – If someone wants to drag you into a witch hunt, refuse to be involved. Don’t contribute to the conversation and don’t get involved.

8. We think we can “save people” – Does that person want to be saved? What are they getting in return for acting that way? Are you rewarding that bad behaviour by giving them attention?

9. We believe that if they like us, everthing will be OK – We are all different in personality, background, how we look and the life experiences that we have had. We cannot expect everyone to like us, nor should everyone like us, if we are saying and doing things just to benefit a person or group of people, what have we sacrificed in order to maintain that relationship? Is that in line with the business vision and mission?

What this results in is:

* People behaving in a way which they know works on us.

* Managers getting caught up in emotional excuses.

* Managers feeling hurt when employees don’t like us.

As we’ve all been reminded lately, business is cyclical. When your company enters a down period, it’s a good time to fine-tune your strategy to improve your chances for success. Here are 10 guidelines for doing just that.

1. Know Your Company: Develop a clear vision for your organization. Define what it does, how it does it and what it stands for. Base your vision on a broader view of what your products or services actually are rather than just how they work. Since people buy solutions, articulate what problems you help solve. Communicate your vision consistently through advertising, packaging, pricing and customer-service policies.

2. Know Your Customers: Define who buys and who influences the purchase of your product or service. Know who uses it and how it is used. Develop a process for tracking and reporting all relevant sales data. Find out what your customers and prospects want by asking them, either through informal polling or formal research studies.

3. Know Your Competition: Learn everything you can about the competition, including their mission and objectives; how they position, manufacture, price and distribute; which markets they serve; and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Start by shopping your competitors, or asking your customers and suppliers about them. If the company is public, become a shareholder in order to gather information.

4. Create a Competitive Advantage: Competing effectively in challenging times involves creating, managing and exploiting assets and skills that competitors find difficult to match or counter. Developing this advantage is a continuing process, not a fixed event. The key is to build unique core competencies that customers want, so you can leverage them to develop new products or go after new markets. This ability helps firms achieve economies of scale and scope across geographic areas and business units.

5. Focus on Customers: Let dissatisfied customers know that their complaints don’t fall on deaf ears and that their problems are taken seriously. You can turn a negative customer experience into a positive one by sending a replacement item (or refund), along with a personal note of apology and some additional item of value. This unexpected extra – which can be a coupon, product or discount on a future purchase – can transform an unhappy customer into a loyal one.

6. Build Customer Loyalty: Every business seeks satisfied customers who return again and again because they trust its product or service. Their repeat business comes at a much lower cost than that of someone who must be constantly enticed into buying.

In addition to working on core product and service attributes that build customer loyalty (such as treating each customer as a valued individual), businesses must work on such issues as instilling a helpful staff attitude, delivering on advertising promises, developing a favorable return policy and providing accurate product information.

7. Target Market Segments: Divide your market into niches, segmenting it by age, income, product type, geography, buying patterns, customer needs, lifestyle and psychographics. Understand which segments have the greatest growth potential and which of your products/services serve them best. Emphasize these niches in your marketing efforts.

8. Engage in Growth Initiatives: Identify opportunities such as geographic expansion or new target markets. Enter those markets using the most effective method (e.g., strategic alliance, outsourcing, direct). Where risks are high and/or adequate internal resources are unavailable, search for a partner who can join in developing a cooperative venture. Select partners with complementary resources and appropriate strategic intent.

9. Create Buzz: Spread news about your products and services through marketing that moves, grows and persuades everyone it touches. A variety of devices can be used, including topical surveys or newsworthy events.

10. Stay Flexible: Competing in challenging times requires a continuous rethinking of current strategies. Strategic flexibility gives any firm the ability to respond quickly to changing conditions and thereby develop and/or maintain a significant competitive edge.

How to correctly price a product has always been a bit of a black art for most product managers. The goal is to not price a product so high that nobody is willing to buy it, while at the same time not pricing it so low that you end up leaving money on the table. It turns out that the correct way to price a product has to do with its parts, not with its cost…

What Do Your Customers Value?

Pricing for a product comes down to two things: what are your customers willing to pay for the product and how satisfied will they be with the amount that they ended up paying for it? In order to create a price that will meet both of these customer expectations, product managers need to find the best way to present their product’s benefits to their customers.

This is where the problems first show up. All too often product managers spend their time (often at the request of their senior management) focusing on the cost of their product when instead they should be worried about communicating the product’s benefits.

The correct way to go about pricing your product is to view it not as a complete product, but rather as a collection of components (product, accessories, support, configuration options, documentation, etc.). Each component does not have the same value to your customer. This means that product managers need to take the time to carefully price each component so that it closely matches the value that the customer places on that particular component.

What Customer Pricing Experiments Show

Researchers Dr. Rebecca Hamilton and Dr. Joydeep Srivastava have studied how customers value different components of a product. They used auto repairs as the product that was being offered and they identified three different components of this product: parts, labor, and shipping (of the parts).

In their studies, the researchers discovered that customers valued parts more than labor, and parts more than shipping. The take-away from this research was that customers assigned a higher price to those things that they viewed as providing them with a higher benefit.

An important lesson for product managers came from the second part of the researcher’s study. Here they dropped the price for labor to nothing. That made customers nervous — somewhat surprisingly they preferred to pay at least something for this component. Clearly, dropping the price of a product’s component below an accepted threshold doesn’t make the product more attractive – it actually makes it less attractive.

Three Guidelines

The end result of the studies were the creation of three guidelines for product managers who are getting ready to price their products:

1. It’s All About Needs: Product managers need to make sure that they fully understand their customer’s needs. If your car battery needs to be replaced, you will be willing to visit a store and pay full price for a new battery and a big discount on the motor oil that you’ll need later instead of visiting another store that can offer you a small discount on both.

2. Bundles Work: : The researchers found that product managers who can combine both high-value and low value components together in packages do the best. They also caution that a product manager should only take the step of offering low-value components for free if that is what the current market will allow.

3. Value Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: : If a product that you are responsible for has a benefit that you think that customers should be placing a greater value on, then it is the responsibility of the product manager to do something about it. Specifically, you need to find ways to clearly communicate the value of that component to your customer in order to boost its value.

What All Of This Means For You

In the end, what your customers are going to be willing to pay for your product is going to depend on how valuable they view it as being. Product managers need to understand that their customers don’t see their product as a blob, instead they see it as a collection of multiple components that they place different values on.

In order to price a product correctly, product managers need to break their product up into the components that their customers see. Then those components need to be matched to your customer’s goals – what do they really value? Finally, high and low benefit components can be grouped together in order to boost your customer’s willingness to pay for the product.

Nobody ever said that pricing a product correctly was going to be easy. However, taking the time to understand how your customer views your product and the value that they put on the different components of your product is the key to doing pricing correctly. Get this right, and you’ll have found the secret to being a successful product manager!

The Verizon Wireless announcement that it will offer the iPhone to its subscribers will sound the starting gun for worldwide shipments of the code division multiple access (CDMA) version of Apple Inc.’s smart phone, helping boost sales of the device by about 25 percent this year, according to new IHS iSuppli research.

IHS iSuppli predicts Apple will ship 12.1 million CDMA iPhones through Verizon and other global CDMA wireless carriers in 2011. This will increase global iPhone shipments to 61.2 million units for the year, up 24.5 percent from the 49.1 million high-speed downlink packet access (HSPDA) and high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) phones offered by AT&T in the United States and other carriers worldwide.

The CDMA model will play a critical role in sustaining the growth of iPhone shipments this year, with total iPhone shipments expected to rise by 33.3 percent for 2011. Excluding CDMA, shipments would climb by only 7 percent.

“The arrival of a CDMA version and the addition of Verizon as a carrier will significantly boost the available market for Apple’s iPhone,” opines Tina Teng, senior analyst, wireless communications, for IHS. “Potential and current iPhone subscribers in the United States long have been clamoring for an alternative to AT&T.”

Rumors have circulated since mid-2009 that Apple would end its exclusive U.S. iPhone service deal and begin to offer phones that work with the Verizon network. However, confirming the IHS iSuppli research outlook from September 2009, Apple maintained its deal with AT&T even after the expiration of their contract in June 2010 and continued the exclusive relationship.

Furthermore, IHS iSuppli research in September 2009 indicated that Verizon might offer another Apple product, rather than the iPhone, such as a tablet. This also came true in 2010, when Verizon began selling the iPad.

Despite the addition of CDMA technology, the Verizon iPhone is not expected to be more costly for the consumer than the existing model sold by AT&T. Given the current iPhone volumes, the expectation is that Apple either already has an intellectual property (IP) license from Qualcomm or is using its original design manufacturer’s license to cover its current wideband code division multiple (WCDMA)-based model. The addition of a CDMA version does not require any material changes to this arrangement so its royalty or semiconductor costs are not likely to increase, according to Francis Sideco, principal analyst, wireless communications, for IHS. IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis research in June, 2010 estimated the iPhone 4′s bill of materials (BOM) at $187.51–a total that has significantly declined in subsequent months.

CDMA iPhone shipments are expected to rise following their debut this year. Shipments will increase to 16.5 million units in 2012, and to 20.3 million in 2013. Shipments then will decline to 18.2 million in 2014, because of the increasing availability of versions of the iPhone with newer air interface standards.

IHS iSuppli research shows Apple to offer an iPhone compatible with the long-term evolution (LTE) 4G trends in 2012, which will allow the handset to take advantage of fast 4G networks. It is expected that both AT&T and Verizon to offer the phones, helping shipments to increase rapidly, amounting to 1.8 million units in 2012, rising to 11.1 million in 2013 and then expanding to 24.2 million in 2014.

The availability of iPhones with a variety of air standards from a number of carriers in the United States and elsewhere will contribute to the continued expansion of global sales. Sales will soar to 98.4 million units in 2014, up from 46 million in 2010.

The heading of this article is not my personal recommendation but was of a foolish Immigration Officer in Kuala Lampur International Airport. Just fifteen minutes after I was landed in Malaysia this was said by him as a response to a gentle request made by me “not to be rude to people”. I know it’s hard for you to believe this was happened in Malaysia as she is frequently been promoted as a tourist destination while 23.6 million Tourists arrived in Malaysia in 2009.

Malaysia is called as one of “Economic Tigers” of Asia and it was amazing to see what they have achieved from the scratched in economic terms. Income generated as a tourist destination is one of key component in Malaysian economy.

I think this story is important to you ( as well as for Malaysia) in management /marketing aspects as there are many lessons to be learnt from this incident.

It was an amazing offer from Air Asia the “World’s best low cost Air Line” as claimed by them, makes it possible for many families to fly into Malaysia. First they sold Air tickets at an affordable rate. On board they sell Tune Talk mobile phone SIM for us to make calls. Once you landed in Malaysia they have their Sky Bus at an attractive rate to go to Down Town. Finally they promote their own Tune Hotel to stay. Extremely great value has been created in all what they offer. No wonder Tony Fernandes the CEO of Air Asia became the Marketer of the year recently. They are so smart to attract customers ( tourists ) and sell many solutions to them. They have a great marketing philosophy and position them very high in the Industry. No second word about it.

But the whole effort by Air Asia, a great marketing firm was in vain because thanks to Immigration who couldn’t control his foul mouth.

“Don’t ever come to Malaysia again”. This particular immigration officer barked at me after giving me instruction in a very rude manner in broken English and when I show my disappointment in his way of speaking. Unfortunately for “Malaysia” he is the person whom tourist have to meet after embarking into the country.

I’m not going to elaborate on the story but we can gain few marketing lessons out this whole scenario.

You could be having a great product selling at a affordable price and available at the right place but you need to maintain quality at its highest level throughout the chain to make it a thriving brand. If you have one bad employee the whole value chain will collapse. In this story the behavior of Immigration Officer is beyond the control of Air Asia but “Tourism Malaysia” which is the authority to promote Malaysia as a tourist destination should emphasize that they don’t have any room or any mercy towards cannibalizers. You need to have a set of people who is focused on a common goal and shares professionalism and no bad eggs are accommodated in the team.

This proved the importance of “marketing” practiced continuously by marketers and non marketers alike. Marketing is a function which will be successful only through an collective effort of everybody in the organization.

Further this silly Immigration Officer may not know the power of “word of mouth” and what kind of a bad impression one can create. It’s a very powerful tool in marketing.

Immigration Officer is normally needed to be a tough character due to the nature of his work. But that is not an excuse or a permission to neglect the fact that you have to protect an image of a country. This is similar to the behavior of a customer care officer in a sales counter. If they do a mistake the image of whole organization may get tarnished and no matter you have the best product in the world. When you are a part of marketing a country you can’t do a single mistake in having right people in the right place. Simple theory is by purchasing a product the consumer is not satisfies with only consuming it. Consumption is an “experience” and people who market the product is playing a significant role in it.

This could be an opportunity for a country like Sri Lanka which is famous for their hospitality. We always treat foreigners with great respect. This may be an unique point for “Sri Lanka Tourism” to promote “Sri Lanka” as one of top tourist destinations in the world.

I may stop quoting Dr. Mahathir Mohammad a great Malaysian who elevated his Motherland to these great heights with single hand;

“I not only think but also look and study things carefully. When I travel around, I look at things carefully, make comparisons of what I see. I don’t accept things at face value, you cannot trust what you hear or see. Don’t jump to conclusions without thinking.”

So don’t think that “Malaysia” is a bad place. But “Malaysia” should not think that Malaysia is divine. In the marketing jargon we called this syndrome “marketing myopia” which is introduced by Prof. Theodore Levitt. You are blind to the customer need because you are fascinated with your product. You should not be myopic otherwise others will look after your customer.

This is valid for a country, to your company and also for you r life.

When you decide to spend a day out with your family, you often want to try out things that you have not attempted before because the thrill of doing something new adds to the thrill and excitement and you enjoy that with everyone present. Then you often run out of ideas because it seems everything is tried before. However, have you ever tried your hand at archery shooting? No, it is not complicated at all. to spend with your families are hard to get and when you do get the opportunity, you should really spend it on something exciting. However, you should know what you are opting and so here are some of the basic things that you should know about the sport. And once you have tried it out, you are going to like it immensely for sure.
Archery, as everyone knows, involves hurling arrows from a bow. It was probably the oldest kind of weapon used in the ancient times and one of the most deadly. Even today, most of the tribes in the world consider the bow and arrow their life savior. However, there is nothing deadly or dangerous about the game. An game involves the placement of a target and you get to shoot very lightweight arrows at it, and that too under the supervision of experts. But there is nothing childlike in it and the excitement is just thrilling. You feel good when you hit the target and if you are with your friends then you can have a nice little competition amongst yourself and see who the better aimer is. Sometimes, these venues have their own competition for the regular members and prizes bestowed away to the best shooter.
In fact, you can enjoy this game with your whole family. Special arrangements are made for the children with extra light bows and blunt arrows. There is absolutely no danger at all. The fees for most of these shooting clubs is very nominal and you can even become a regular member if you like it. Otherwise you can drop in when you want. If you are an absolute novice and of its first time, then you will also get a preliminary training regarding the basics of archery. The trick of course is too keep your hand steady.
Archery shooting is one of those adventure playoffs where you do not need to be particularly robust and yet you enjoy the excitement of a good game. After you experience it, you can be sure that you have tried something different and cease to look for an alternative for a long time for sure!
